The Demand For a Sign [2]
Important things you need to know about signs.
❤️A quick one before we commence. This is a continuation of what we wrote last week. If you are yet to read part 1, kindly do so HERE.
🎧Note to the reader: This soundtrack was attached to aid your reading experience. You are welcome!
It was a bright and sunny Sunday afternoon. Mololuwa had just woken up from the nap she took when she got back from her place of worship. She was anticipating the enlightening conversation she was going to have with her Mom later that evening.
Evening time came and her Mom asked what she learnt from their last conversation. She pointed out the fact that “you don't need a sign to believe God, you need faith.”
“Beautiful! Now, we are going to be looking at important things you need to know about signs from the pages of the Scripture. Are you ready?” Her Mom asked.
“Yes Ma!” Mololuwa responded.
“Okayyy, let's go!” Her Mom continued speaking…
You know, God has always worked with signs and that's because signs can help you gain clarity and further strengthen your conviction.
What then is a sign?
I will be stating out four definitions to you and we will also relate them with the scriptures.
A sign is that mark by which a person or a thing is distinguished from others and is known.
It is an unusual occurrence transcending the common course of nature.
It portends remarkable events soon to happen.
It can also be of miracles and wonders by which God authenticates the men sent by Him, or by which men prove that the cause they are pleading is God's.
“Hmm! Mom, these are powerful definitions of a sign.” Mololuwa said intently.
“Yes my dear. Now, let me show you how these definitions relate to the scripture.” Her Mom continued speaking…
Matthew 2:1-2 KJV
[1] Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
[2] saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
Do you know that “his star” served as a sign to the three wise men that truly, the King had been born. If there was no star shinning in the east, they could have mistaken any other baby for baby Jesus. His star served as a sign that distinguished Jesus from every other baby that was born.
Matthew 2:9 KJV
[9] When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
“The star went before them and stood over where the young child was.” This is to tell you that the star gave them direction and clarity that truly, this is where Jesus was born.
“Yes Mom!” Mololuwa said deeply.
Another example is what happened between Hezekiah and Prophet Isaiah. A quick background story before we look at the exact Scripture.
Hezekiah had been given a death prophecy by Prophet Isaiah but he did not accept it. Instead, he took the prophecy to the Lord and prayed that it would be reversed.
Then God heard Hezekiah’s prayer and He reversed the death prophecy over him. Now, God gave Hezekiah another prophecy that He will add 15years to his life and save him and the city. But, Hezekiah asked for a sign about this prophecy God gave him.
II Kings 20:9-11 NKJV
[9] Then Isaiah said, “This is the sign to you from the Lord, that the Lord will do the thing which He has spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees or go backward ten degrees?”
[10] And Hezekiah answered, “It is an easy thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees; no, but let the shadow go backward ten degrees.”
[11] So Isaiah the prophet cried out to the Lord, and He brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down on the sundial of Ahaz.
We can see that letting the shadow go ten degrees backward was an unusual occurrence transcending the common course of nature.
Another example is when Jesus disciples asked Him for the signs before the end time. Luke 21:7 KJV;
[7] And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass?
Then Jesus started telling them the signs before the end time. I would have read it out for us but it's a long read. At your leisure time, you can read Luke 21:8-31.
But let's see Luke 21:31 NKJV. It says; “So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.”
“Mom, so these are the signs portending a remarkable event(the second coming of Christ) soon to happen right?” Mololuwa asked.
“Yes my love. Now, let's move to the last example.” Her Mom continued speaking.
John 20:30-31 NKJV
The Purpose of the Book.
[30] And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book;
[31] but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
“Mom, this means, the signs Jesus did was to authenticate that God truly sent Him or that He was pleading God's cause.” Mololuwa said emphatically.
“Yes! And you know it says that ‘but these are written that you may believe.’ Written where? In the Bible which is the written word of God. This Bible also serve as a sign that you may believe.” Her Mom said.
“Hmm! Very true, Mom. So I go to the written word of God to confirm what He is saying!” Mololuwa exclaimed.
“Exactly. Do you know the most beautiful thing? You don't have to look for signs to believe. You, believe first and signs will follow you according to what was written in Mark 16:17; “And these signs shall follow them that believe…” Her Mom continued speaking…
Finally, you will now become ‘a sign’ because “I and the children that the Lord has given me are for signs and wonders(Isaiah 8:18).”
“Wow! Mom, this is so powerful. How do you know all these things?” Mololuwa asked.
“Well, it's not me. It is the Holy Spirit who is at work in me. I have been watching you lately Mololuwa, how you are so quick to rush out of God's presence. You don't sit still in His presence. Learn to stay and learn of Him. Let Him open your eyes to the mysteries of this Kingdom. Sit still in His presence. I'm praying for you!” Her Mom said deeply.
Mololuwa could feel her heart burn within her and with that, she said, “Yes Mom! I will. Thank you so much for the Word. May the Holy Spirit continually work in and through you. I love you Mom.”
“I love you too my darling daughter. I think I should let you know something very crucial before we call it a day.” Her Mom continued speaking…
Sometimes, signs do not even guarantee you will believe God. Let's take a look at John 12:37 NLT;
[37] But despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of the people still did not believe in him.
So what then do you need?
Like I told you earlier, you need faith!
God is saying; I don't need your doubt, I need your faith. I need you to walk with the evidence of things not seen.
Alright, that would be all for today. I need to quickly get to the grocery store.
“Yes Mom! Thank you so much.” Mololuwa said.
💡Lights out!

God bless you,Ma
This was such a good read! I actually did learn something; I will believe then signs will come! The Bible is also a sign! And I think the Holy Spirit just spoke to me; that even when I ask for a sign, it should be scripture based!
